I saw this picture on Facebook of a fortune cookie fortune that said: "God will give you everything you want."
While I know that statement is far from the truth, I started thinking about it and realized how often I treat God that way. I am guilty of asking God for so many things then pouting when I don't get everything I asked for. We sometimes see Him as this genie who grants wishes instead of a Savior, who redeems our sin. God does not exist for us; we were created for Him.
Growing up, if my parents had given me every single thing I wanted, I would probably still be sitting on their couch eating Doritos and watching Disney channel movies. But they knew that what I wanted at that time wasn't what was best for me. Looking back I'm so grateful that they didn't give me everything I thought I wanted because I never would've gotten to where I am now.
It's the same thing in our relationship with God. He knows our wants, but He gives us what we need. What we fail to remember is that He is for us & not against us! God has our best interests at heart, but yet we let our selfishness get in the way of His plans for our lives. God loves to bless us because He loves us more than we could imagine. But blessings don't always come without suffering.
I don’t know about y’all, but I like to be in control. When I know what I want, I go after it full force ready to check it off my list and move on to the next thing. There have been many times when God allowed me to have my way, and it ended up a disaster because I was putting my desires above His. It is ridiculous that I could ever think that I know better than God what is best for my life, but so often I live my life that way.
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalms 37:4
It is so easy to read this verse and twist it into a gain for ourselves. I used to think that if I were a Christian and lived my life for Him then He would give me all the things that I had always so desperately wished for of this world, but when reading this verse I missed the first part, “Delight yourself in the Lord..” and how incredibly important it is. I got so caught up in what I was going to gain that I almost missed the whole point. When we delight ourselves in Jesus and seek Him with our whole heart, it changes us and our desires. Things that I used to think were so important, seem so silly now. When we align our heart with God's then our souls start to burn for more of Him and the things that bring Him glory, not ourselves.
Could you imagine how different our everyday lives would look if our hearts were focused on God’s desires for us instead of our own? The hungry would be fed, the unloved would be loved, the weary would find rest, the broken would be restored, the lost would be found, & His name would constantly be praised.
Just think, if God allowed us to have everything we ever wanted do you think we would depend on Him more or less? And even if He did, we would still never be satisfied without Him. We are all intricately designed by the Creator of the world, and yet we are constantly asking Him to do things our way because we think we know what we want when in reality we only NEED Him. So let’s stop focusing on our wants and start focusing on God’s desire for our lives so that we can spread His love to everyone.
“And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” -Galatians 5:24
Have an amazing week & keep seeking His heart!
