I've been a Christian for thirty years. I'm a PK who has sat in countless Sunday and Wednesday services and listened to anything from hymns to Christian rap. I've taught Sunday School (children, youth, and adult), led small groups, volunteered at VBS, and given my testimony countless times.
I'm also a rebel who has turned her back on God more than once. I've sinned, not just in my heart and mind, but with my body. I've hurt and I've been hurt as a result. My screaming matches with the God I paid homage to over and over again are monumental. In my heart, I've simultaneously loved and hated the God who made me and the God who sees every fiber of my being.
I've called out, begging for the love that was always there. And I've gritted my teeth in anger because I didn't want to be loved.
On the outside, Lecrae Moore and I don't have much in common. He's a black man and I'm a white woman. But on the inside . . . different story.
For the exception of Scripture, few books have convicted me as much as Unashamed by Lecrae Moore.
Lecrae Moore, simply known as Lecrae, is a world-renown, two-time Grammy Award winning American Christian hip hop artist, songwriter, record producer and actor. In his book, Unashamed, Lecrae walks the reader through his tumultuous journey that ultimately leads to a awe-inspiring relationship with the God who creates and the God who sees. (If you download the book on Audible.com, Lecrae reads his own words and the effect is quite powerful.)
Beginning with a childhood riddled with abandonment and abuse, Lecrae describes his exposure to situations and knowledge no child should be given. What resulted was a distorted view of relationship and sexuality that accompanied him into a troubled adolescence begging for guidance and clarity. Lecrae was exposed to the Truth from an early age, but exposure in the absence of consistent discipleship, oftentimes isn't enough. Eventually, he shares the story of his true conversion and awakening including a faith initially trapped in legalism, but set free by grace.
Gut wrenching, yet poetic in the telling of his story, Lecrae ministers to the masses with the authentic desire to use his art as a medium to inspire change in the name of Jesus Christ.
