I see Orion dropping from the sky and diving headlong into the horizon once more. I suppose it’s a sight I’ve seen reaching into the thousands now, but I’m still captured by the monotony of its free-fall; night after night arching to the heights of the night, sky only to fall once more into the apparent abyss of the universe. I love things that can be counted on. There’s a comfort in things changeless, things timeless. So much of life changes: life circumstances, people darting in and out of days, an ever-changing body in which its battle with gravity seems to be a lost cause. But not the sky! The stars appear at their appointed time every night and retreat every morning into the day. With great precession, the Earth turns on a constant and rotates the view so that the parade of creation may be displayed over and over. How relaxing! I look at the morning sky not knowing what today will bring, but there’s peace in knowing who brings the day from the night. Who calls Orion back home? Who leashes the stars for their return to another’s view? What an applause there must be in heaven on each morning at the celestial parade! The angels sing. The seraphs proclaim. Those in His presence must shout glory, glory, glory to the maker of the stars. What thanks I have for the morning of Orion’s plunge one more time! What joy comes from my Fathers command over all He has made?
Father, I have great applause for you over this morning you’ve made! I thank you for bringing it forth once more out of the monotony of your grace. With precision and magnificence, you rule the expanse of space with galaxies, quasars, and nebulas ordering them into shapes and designs for our pleasure. Your power moves the earth. With strength, you rule the sky. Your grace holds all things together. O what great comfort for us in change to know you never do. Christ, help me to center on your abilities! Let me count on the changelessness of your love for me. Spirit, bring to my mind the gratefulness for you opening my eyes once more to the sight of the changeless morning sky. Who am I Lord that you would let me see such wonders? What have I done so pleasing that you would invite me to your show of power? Forgive me for all the days my hands ignored their call to clap over the joy of being made by you. By the grace of Christ let me like Orion be leashed by you. Command me O God to dive headlong into your mercy. I rejoice over your changelessness Lord! In this day you have made for grace and by grace let my words be of your glory. Let me speak grace upon grace to all I encounter today. Let mercy be my lead, and your joy be my companion. Maker of the stars, you are magnificent!!!
