Apparently, I have a problem with Christmas. The birth of Christ, no problem. The holiness of the virgin conception, no problem. Christmas commercialism, big problem. And it’s a 30 year old grudge revealed by the One who loves me.
Growing up our Christmas’ were modestly decorated. So that was what I knew. I was 18 before my first exposure to extreme decorating. Culture shock for sure but manageable. By the 8th Christmas and the end of that relationship I had attached negative feelings to extreme decorating. I was unaware that each Christmas I harbored that grudge, fed that grudge to the point of hating Christmas decorating and some years refused to do any decorating. I fear what I’ve taught our kids...
This year, God clearly wants the hatred excised from my heart where it had taken root and become a barrier in my relationship with Him. He orchestrated events to impart the need to ‘get over it’. With this stark realization and shame of letting such bitterness grow in my heart, I am now fully aware and daily pulling weeds so they may not take root again.
This year, decorating will be worshipful and not begrudging. I will purpose to be joy-full. Will it be extreme? Probably not, but it will be tender and mindful of why we celebrate Christmas.
My hope is to soften our children hearts who have lived with a grinch their entire lives.
I know I am not alone in this season. Others have shared they’ve attached wounds to Christmas robbing themselves and loved ones of joy. Let this year be different. Don’t let past or present hurts, traumas or experiences make you into the grinch who silently or not so silently steals Christmas. This year… Be Joy, Be Love, Be Healed. I will join you… and Merry Christmas!!!
