Recently I had the opportunity to travel with a friend out of state. We took multiple flights over the course of just a few days. I am a complete extrovert (shocker, I know) and rarely do I meet a stranger. I enjoy talking to people and learning about their stories. Flights are usually great opportunities to engage in conversation. On my way to St. Louis I had a great conversation with a couple. They were in children’s ministry and were on their way home to prepare for VBS. We had a nice talk. My flight home was very different. As I approached my row I discovered a 20 something year old man sitting in the seat next to mine. He wasn’t sociable….AT ALL! I had no sooner sat down and he put ear buds in and began listening to music (LOUD music) and playing a game on his phone. I’m not judging him, I get it! Sometimes you just want to chill and not be bothered. That was clearly his goal and he was quite successful.
As I sat there, listening to his music, I couldn’t help but to think of how often I probably do that very same thing to God. How often do I forfeit the opportunity to spend time with the Creator of the universe by drowning Him out with stuff? I allow busyness, to-do lists, hobbies, relationships with family members and friends to distract me from experiencing all that God has in store for me. How often do I allow myself to miss out on the very best thing by focusing on good things? These thoughts caused me to reflect and honestly I have some work to do.
I desire, more than anything, to have a thriving, growing and deepening relationship with the Lord. I want to know Him more deeply and understand His will and purpose for my life more fully. I recognize that in order for this to take place there are some things I must do. I must spend uninterrupted, daily time with Him. I must spend time reading and studying scripture. I must spend time talking to Him in prayer and then spend equal, or greater time, listening for His still small voice to guide me. I must seek to serve and love others with greater focus and intentionality. These “musts” are crucial if I desire to live out God’s plan for my life.
What about you? Are you enjoying a growing and healthy relationship with Lord? Do you recognize when He is speaking to or guiding you or does your relationship with Him sound more like a conversation with Charlie Brown’s teacher….wah wah wah wah wah? Jeremiah 29:12-13 says, “ Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” This passage is the perfect recipe for clearing up the unintelligible communication you may have with the Lord. Are you willing to give it a try?
