I've been in church my whole life and have never heard of Shamgar—ever. Which goes to show you, you are never too old to read a children's book and gain wisdom.
Shamgar (every time I type his name, autocorrect wants to spell Shammer) is mentioned twice in the Old Testament. Once in Judges 3:3:
After him was Shamgar the son of Anath, who killed 600 of the Philistines with an oxgoad, and he also saved Israel.
And again in Judges 5:6:
“In the days of Shamgar, son of Anath,
in the days of Jael, the highways were abandoned,
and travelers kept to the byways.
You might think given the obscurity of the name, there isn't much to work with—and that is where you would be wrong.
I won't provide any spoilers, but Mrs. Joyce Ashley teams up with illustrator Jamie Ashley, and together they tell a precious story valuable for both children and adults. How do we react to difficult situations? What are the tools God has given us? What should we do with those tools? How can we influence others in our choices? All of these questions are answered in three simple steps that even a child can comprehend.
Mrs. Ashley is a seasoned educator and the founder of JoyJoy Ministries. Click on the picture below to link to Amazon. It is available in paperback and on Kindle. I found this book delightful in its message and presentation and highly recommend for children of all ages.
