A friend asked for one word to describe a personal goal or theme for 2016. Hers was consistency. Good word. Like most women who spend their lives hustling and bustling, a dozen words came to mind immediately, but one was highlighted and blinking at me like a neon sign: intentional. Be intentional. What does that exactly mean?
Intentional is an adjective that describes something done on purpose or deliberate. In other words, not random.
Proverbs 2 discusses the importance of intentionality:
My son, if you receive my words
and treasure up my commandments with you,
2 making your ear attentive to wisdom
and inclining your heart to understanding;
3 yes, if you call out for insight
and raise your voice for understanding,
4 if you seek it like silver
and search for it as for hidden treasures,
5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
The above five verses describe choices. Choose to receive. Choose to treasure. Choose to be attentive. Choose to incline your heart. Choose to call out for insight. Choose to raise your voice. Choose to seek and search.
Great leaders recognize the power of choosing well and they also recognize the pay-off. Read verse 5 again: You will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.
So, where does this treasure hunt take place? Within scripture, on your knees, in your heart.
